Most companies rely on some sort of critical data to operate. For some there’s technology data, for others it’s customer information. It could be accounting data, or order tracking data, or whatever. The question is – How safe is that data?
Some businesses do backups themselves, others hire outside firms to do this for them. These backups are made to the Internet, or to a remote hard drive. Yet, it appears that many never actually have drilled the process of restoring from that backup. The proof of this is evident when we look at how many companies experience the loss of their data. According to a study published by Symantec in 2013 –
“Today, organizations often store their information on physical, virtual and cloud storage. This can create a very complicated environment when it comes to backup and recovery. In fact, more than two-thirds of enterprises today are using three or more solutions to back up their data. This creates problems for IT, which has to train staff on multiple products and spend extra cycles managing the process. It also means there is no single view of the network. The consequences of this complexity are starting to show.
More than 40 percent have lost data in the cloud and have had to restore their information from backups (47 percent of enterprises and 37 percent of SMBs). Two-thirds of those organizations saw recovery operations fail. Furthermore, recovering data from the cloud is slow. Just one third rate cloud data recovery as fast. How slow? More than one-fifth estimate recovering from the cloud would take three days or longer. How many businesses can afford to shut down for three days?”
So what’s the solution to insuring the safety of your company’s vital data? Simple – test your backup method by simulating a data loss and restoring from the backup. Proving whether your backup actually works or not may save you a lot of grief.
